82-Year-Old Farmer Arrested for Alleged Attempted Murder In Free State

On Friday, May 24, at approximately 8.30 pm, a confrontation occurred on a farm in the Ladybrand region of Free State, involving an 82-year-old farmer and two young men, aged 18 and 19.

The young men were reportedly hunting on private property without permission when they were approached by the elderly farmer. According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring, the farmer allegedly became hostile, swearing at the young men before they attempted to flee in their car.

As the young men tried to escape, the elderly farmer purportedly pursued them, and in a dramatic turn of events, he allegedly began shooting at the vehicle. One of the bullets struck the driver in the back of his shoulder.

Despite the injury, the driver’s friend managed to take control of the vehicle and drove them back to their own farm. Upon arrival, the injured young man’s uncle promptly transported him to a hospital in Bloemfontein, where he received medical treatment for his gunshot wound.

The incident was reported to the authorities the following day, which led to a police investigation. Through this investigation, the suspect was identified and subsequently arrested.

The elderly farmer now faces charges related to attempted murder, bringing a spotlight to issues of property rights and self-defence in rural communities.

Following the report of the incident on Saturday, May 25, the 82-year-old suspect was promptly identified and arrested by the authorities.

The police also confiscated the suspect’s firearm for further ballistic examination and as an exhibit in the ongoing investigation.

On Monday, May 27, the suspect appeared before the Ladybrand Magistrate’s Court. Details regarding the charges, which include two counts of attempted murder, are expected to be revealed as the legal proceedings unfold.
