A 50-year-old man appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday following a significant drug bust by the police. The arrest came as a result of a joint operation involving officers from the Provincial Organised Crime and Provincial Drug and Firearm Unit.
The suspect was apprehended on Tuesday, and the subsequent investigation led to the discovery of drugs worth over R1 million.

According to Colonel Robert Netshiunda, the KZN Police spokesperson, the police executed search warrants at an estate in Umhlanga and Sommerset Park. However, further investigations directed them to a flat on Dr Pixley Ka Seme Street (formerly known as West Street) in Durban, where the suspect was caught with drugs and empty drug capsules.
During the raids, law enforcement officials seized cocaine powder, cocaine bullets, heroin powder, and rock cocaine. The estimated value of the recovered drugs amounts to R1.3 million. The suspect now faces charges of dealing in drugs, highlighting the severity of the offence.
This recent arrest and seizure of drugs underscore the ongoing efforts by the South African Police Service (SAPS) to combat drug-related crimes. In January, the SAPS confiscated drugs worth nearly R90 million during various operations.
These confiscated drugs were subsequently destroyed under the supervision of National SA Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola in Cape Town.

Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, the National Police spokesperson, explained that the destroyed drugs were initially seized during police operations such as roadblocks and tracing operations in the Western and Eastern Cape.
The substances included tik, cocaine, and mandrax, all of which pose significant dangers to individuals and communities.
The diligent work of law enforcement agencies in uncovering and confiscating these illegal substances is crucial in curbing the drug trade and protecting society.
