Newborn Baby Found Alive In Dustbin At Somerset West Mall As 25-Year-Old Woman Arrested

A 25-year-old woman has been arrested after a newborn baby boy was discovered alive inside a dustbin in a toilet at Somerset West Mall on Monday, 21 September 2026. The baby was found shortly after 2pm after a passerby reportedly heard faint sounds coming from the bathroom and alerted security personnel.

Police confirmed that a case of concealment of birth has been opened and is being investigated. The newborn, who was described by emergency responders as very premature, was taken to hospital for medical care following the discovery.

Somerset West Mall Baby Discovery Leads To Police Investigation

Western Cape police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed that officers were notified about the newborn found in the toilets along Main Road, Somerset West. He said the investigation centres on a case of concealment of birth, while a 25-year-old woman was arrested in connection with the incident.

“Be advised that a case of concealing of birth is under investigation after police were alerted on 21 September 2026 just after 2pm of a baby found in the toilets in Main Road, Somerset West,” Van Wyk reported.

He said authorities responded to the scene and the baby was subsequently transported to a nearby hospital. The circumstances surrounding how the newborn came to be inside the bin remain part of the police investigation.

Somerset West Newborn Baby Taken To Hospital After Discovery

The discovery was initially made after a passerby heard what sounded like soft noises coming from the toilet. Security was alerted and a subsequent search revealed the newborn boy inside a bin, still alive.

Sophia Warner, a first responder with Helderberg Baby Saver, attended the scene with a colleague after the emergency was reported. She said the baby was taken to a pharmacy within the shopping centre, where pharmacy nurses provided care while emergency services were contacted.

“I activated the emergency protocol from the location and Secure Rite Security and GB Med Rescue was activated. The paramedics came to the pharmacy and the very premature baby was transported to hospital, where I believe the infant is stable.”

Emergency personnel who attended the scene said the baby was extremely premature and still had his umbilical cord attached. He was later transported by emergency medical personnel to Helderberg Hospital for further treatment.

Somerset West Baby Stable As Child Protection Process Begins

Abulele Dyasi, communications officer for the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness, confirmed that the infant was admitted to Helderberg Hospital on Monday. She said police visited the facility to verify the baby’s condition and that the appropriate hospital procedures had been followed.

“The South African Police Service visited the hospital to verify the infant’s condition, and all relevant hospital protocols have been followed. The baby is currently in a stable condition,” Dyasi said.

Dyasi added that the matter had been referred through the relevant child protection channels. The case was reported to the Department of Social Development’s National Child Protection Register for further investigation and intervention.

Warner described the circumstances as an awful situation requiring sensitivity towards everyone involved. She said particular consideration should be given to the mother and the circumstances that may have led to her making what she described as a difficult decision.
