Newborn Baby Abandoned In KZN Baby Box Sparks Outrage

A newborn baby boy was abandoned in the Umhlali Baby Box at Christ Church North Coast, KwaZulu-Natal, on Sunday, 6 October. The discovery has reignited national debate about the importance of baby boxes and concerns over government plans to criminalise them.

An alarm alerted emergency services that a baby had been placed in the box. IPSS Medical Rescue and Project Life SA teams rushed to the scene, where they found the infant warmly wrapped in blankets.

“A beautiful baby boy was found, warmly wrapped up in blankets. After a quick check-up by paramedics and alerting the relevant authorities, he was placed into the care of a loving family for the weekend,” said IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson, Samantha Meyrick.

“To his mom, thank you for the care you took in placing him in the Baby Box, for loving him enough to choose his safety during what must be a difficult time,” she added.

Baby Boxes Offer Safe Alternative for Mothers in Crisis

The baby box initiative, launched by Project Life SA and Baby Savers SA, allows mothers in distress to safely and anonymously surrender their babies without fear of prosecution. Each box is monitored 24 hours a day to ensure the immediate safety of the child.

The Umhlali Baby Box was installed two years ago and recorded its first abandonment in June this year. These facilities have been credited with saving lives by preventing infants from being left in unsafe environments such as dumpsites, fields, or public toilets.

However, the Department of Social Development (DSD) has proposed changes to the law that could classify babies placed in baby boxes as “abandoned,” effectively criminalising baby saver operations.

Public Urged to Fight Plan to Ban Newborn Baby Saver Programmes

Non-profit organisation Open Arms SA has called on South Africans to support baby saver programmes and oppose government plans to outlaw them. The NGO encouraged citizens to comment on the Department’s Children Amendment Bill, 2025, via the department’s website.

Democratic Alliance MP Alexandra Abrahams warned that the proposed bill could lead to more babies being abandoned in unsafe places.

“In a deeply concerning move, the DSD has proposed redefining an ‘abandoned child’ to include any baby safely relinquished or placed in a baby saver. This would criminalise desperate mothers and the registered child protection organisations that have saved countless lives,” Abrahams said.

“We will not allow a culture in SA to exist where desperate mothers are forced to abandon their babies in unsafe locations such as fields, dumpsites and sewers, because the safe relinquishment and the operation of baby savers are criminalised,” she added.

The DA has urged citizens to make submissions to the DSD opposing the proposed legislation and to stand in defence of safe surrender options for vulnerable infants.
