New Magistrate To Hear Crime Intelligence Boss Dumisani Khumalo’s Bid To Relax Bail Conditions

The Pretoria Regional Court has appointed a new presiding officer to handle the case involving Crime Intelligence boss Dumisani Khumalo and his two co-accused. The trio is expected to appear in court on Wednesday morning to request that their bail conditions be relaxed so they can return to work.

Khumalo and his co-accused face serious allegations of fraud and corruption linked to the appointment of 30-year-old Dineo Mokwele to a specialised position within the Crime Intelligence division, despite her alleged lack of prior policing experience.

Dumisani Khumalo Case: Previous Magistrate Steps Down

Chief Magistrate of the Pretoria Regional Court, Vusimuzi Mahlangu, recused himself from the matter on Tuesday.

The case involves Khumalo, Precious Madondo, and Josias Lekalakala, who were arrested in June by the Investigative Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) on charges of fraud and corruption.

According to IDAC spokesperson Henry Mamothame, Mahlangu’s withdrawal came after he was subpoenaed by the Madlanga Commission to testify.

“He cited reasons related to allegations that have been levelled against the judiciary and the Madlanga Commission,” Mamothame said.

The matter will now proceed under a new presiding officer.

The prosecution is expected to oppose any changes to the bail conditions. The State argues that many of the witnesses scheduled to testify are employees of the Crime Intelligence division, making it necessary to restrict the accused’s contact with potential witnesses.

The outcome of Wednesday’s submissions will determine whether Khumalo and his co-accused can resume their duties while awaiting trial.
