Nelson Mandela’s Grandson And Three Others Arrested In Hijacking Case At Mandela’s Historic Houghton Residence

Four individuals, including a grandson of former South African president Nelson Mandela, were arrested early this morning following the recovery of a suspected hijacked vehicle at Mandela’s historic Houghton residence.

The grandson, whose identity is known to SurgeZirc SA but remains undisclosed pending official confirmation, is among the suspects detained in connection with the hijacking of a vehicle last night in Benoni.

According to preliminary police reports, the hijacked vehicle was driven to the Houghton property while the original driver was still in the car. Details regarding the driver’s current condition are unclear, though it has been confirmed he is now at an Ekurhuleni police station, preparing to file a case.

A Home in Decline

The Houghton residence, once a beacon of Mandela’s legacy, has fallen into neglect in recent years, casting a shadow over the revered leader’s memory.

Reports indicate the house has been in disrepair since Mandela’s grandchildren vacated the property after the City of Johannesburg cut electricity services due to unpaid municipal bills, which had ballooned from R15,000 to R50,000 per month.

Mbuso Mandela, one of Nelson Mandela’s grandchildren, has publicly criticised trustees of the Nelson Mandela Trust, accusing them of failing to act in the family’s best interests and neglecting the estate’s maintenance.

“There is a lot of collusion happening between the trustees and the executor of the estate,” Mbuso stated. “Everybody knows that if you sit on the board of a trust, you get a stipend for maintaining the trust. I believe these guys are working together to ensure that the maintenance of this house does not happen.”

Efforts to Preserve Mandela’s Legacy

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi recently pledged to restore the historic residence, recognising its significance as a cornerstone of Mandela’s legacy. Additionally, philanthropist Collen Mashawana, through his foundation, has offered to fund renovations, potentially marking a turning point in the preservation of this iconic home.

The four suspects arrested at the property, including Mandela’s grandson, are facing charges of hijacking and possession of a stolen vehicle. An unlicensed firearm was also recovered at the scene, though police have yet to confirm whether it was connected to the crime.

The arrest raises critical questions about security and the safeguarding of Mandela’s heritage as the once-iconic residence becomes a focal point for both controversy and restoration efforts.
