Nearly R80 Million Spent On Deporting Illegal Immigrants In 2024, Says Schreiber

Home Affairs Minister Dr Leon Schreiber has confirmed that almost R80 million has already been spent in the 2024/2025 financial year on deporting illegal immigrants.

Schreiber disclosed the figure in a written reply to a Parliamentary question from the Patriotic Alliance’s Millicent Mothapa, who requested details on the costs incurred by the department in recent years.

Immigrants Deportation Costs Over Three Years

The department’s spending on deportations has climbed sharply in recent years. In the 2022/2023 financial year, deportations cost South Africa just over R32 million. By 2023/2024, the figure had more than doubled to more than R67 million.

Now, less than halfway into the 2024/2025 financial year, the total has already reached nearly R80 million — signalling another steep increase.
