NATJOINTS Vows Strong Security Measures To Prevent G20 Summit Disruptions

South Africa’s national joint operational and intelligence structure (NATJOINTS) has vowed that security forces are fully prepared to deal with any potential disruptions as the G20 leaders’ summit opens in Johannesburg this weekend.

Heads of state, global dignitaries, and senior officials are expected to gather at the Nasrec Expo Centre in the south of the city for the high-profile event. The precinct is already under heavy surveillance, with heightened police visibility and strict access control.

Despite these measures, certain groups have threatened to disrupt the summit. This includes the South African Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU), which has pledged to take action if its salary disparity dispute with the City of Johannesburg remains unresolved.

NATJOINTS Outlines Five-Pillar Security Plan for G20 Summit

NATJOINTS held a state-of-readiness briefing at Nasrec on Tuesday night, where it detailed its comprehensive five-pillar security strategy for the event.

The approach includes intelligence gathering on possible threats, tactical responses to violent incidents, continuous police surveillance, and the swift detention of anyone attempting to break the law.

With protests expected, the structure said these measures are designed to manage any unauthorised or disruptive individuals near the precinct.

NATJOINTS co-chair Tebello Mosikile emphasised that the country’s security capabilities should not be unnecessarily tested during the summit.

“Should the need arise, the SANDF is also on standby to exercise their secondary role of supporting the SAPS. Are implementing our combat approach in response to any violation of the law through the deployment of our uniformed officers including our specialised units,” said Mosikile.

She added that assessments indicate law enforcement has sufficient personnel on the ground to respond to any security breaches over the summit period.
