Nathi Mthethwa Death In Paris: Family Welcomes SAPS Investigation Support

The family of the late South African ambassador to France, Nathi Mthethwa, is travelling to Paris to repatriate his remains following his sudden death.

The 58-year-old was found dead on Tuesday, 30 September, after falling from the 22nd floor of the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Paris. His autopsy results are expected on Sunday, while the death certificate is still pending.

Mthethwa’s brother-in-law, Dr Sfiso Buthelezi, confirmed on Friday that French authorities are finalising processes.

“The body is in the government mortuary (Paris). They must still do the autopsy. They said they think by Monday, at the latest, Tuesday, they’ll finish their processes, and they can hand the body over to us. Then we must start the process of repatriating the remains back home,” he explained.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed it will support French authorities in investigating the ambassador’s death.

Police Minister Firoz Cachalia announced on Friday that a specialised team, led by Major General Bongani Maqhashalala — the Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Crime Detection in the Western Cape — will travel to Paris.

Ministry spokesperson Kamogelo Mogotsi said the joint investigation highlights the importance of a transparent probe.

“The deployed team will work closely with French law enforcement authorities to ensure that the circumstances surrounding Ambassador Mthethwa’s death are thoroughly and transparently investigated.

He further informed us that he will be sending a highly experienced and capable team to work alongside the French authorities in probing the passing of the late ambassador, Nathi Mthethwa,” Buthelezi shared.
