Nandipha Magudumana Family Member Arrested As Assault Charge Escalates To Attempted Murder

A family member of Dr Nandipha Magudumana has been arrested alongside two other suspects following a violent incident in Randburg during the early hours of Saturday morning. Police allege the trio brutally assaulted a man they accused of attempting to rob them.

The relative, whose identity was not disclosed, was first detained on a charge of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH). As the investigation progressed, the charge was upgraded to attempted murder due to the severity of the victim’s injuries.

Dr Magudumana is currently awaiting trial and remains a central figure in the high-profile Thabo Bester prison escape saga, in which she is accused of playing an active role. The latest arrest involving a family member has again drawn attention to the broader Magudumana family.

Assault Case Escalates as Victim Fights for Life

According to a source with intimate knowledge of the case, the decision to escalate the charge was taken after medical assessments revealed the victim was in a critical condition.

The man is reportedly fighting for his life in hospital, prompting prosecutors to pursue the more serious charge of attempted murder.

South African Police Service spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko confirmed the arrests and outlined the charges. “A case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) was opened on Saturday, February 7, 2026. Three suspects have been arrested,” Sibeko said.

Nandipha Magudumana Family’s Past Public Reflections on Bester Saga

Members of the Magudumana family have previously spoken publicly about the intense scrutiny they faced following revelations around the Bester escape.

One of the most prominent voices has been Nkosinathi Sekeleni, who featured in documentaries and media reports examining the case.

Sekeleni appeared in the Showmax documentary Tracking Thabo Bester, where he reflected on the impact the saga had on the family.

In the series, he said he believed his sister had changed significantly after becoming involved with Bester, attributing her actions to what he described as Bester’s strong influence and manipulation.

He told the docuseries that the family struggled to recognise the person she had become and revealed that he even reached out to her husband during the ordeal, who expressed similar disbelief at her behaviour.
