Farewell To A Legend: Mam’ Nandi Nyembe’s Memorial And Funeral Service Details Revealed

South Africa is mourning the loss of veteran actress Mam’ Nandi Nyembe, who sadly passed away over the weekend. Known for her unforgettable roles in some of Mzansi’s most iconic TV shows, Mam’ Nandi leaves behind a rich legacy in the entertainment industry.

Just a few months ago, the public became aware of Mam Nandi’s struggles. Wheelchair-bound and battling health issues, she reached out for assistance. Many people, including Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie and her industry peers, pledged their support.

McKenzie even vowed to use his personal funds to help her — but heartbreakingly, Mam’ Nandi allegedly never received the financial assistance promised, nor the money that had been raised for her care. Despite the setbacks, she remained hopeful about returning to the screen to sustain herself. Sadly, she never got that chance.

Mzansi will get to celebrate Mam’ Nandi Nyembe’s life and bid her farewell at two services. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, 28 August, at The Market Theatre in Newtown from 11am to 3pm. This will be followed by her funeral service on Saturday, 30 August, at a venue still to be confirmed, running from 7am to 10am.

A Life of Storytelling

For decades, Mam’ Nandi was a household name, known especially for her role as Nandi Sibiya on Zone 14, Lily on Yizo Yizo, and her lead role in Izoso Connexion.

Her TV credits read like a history of South African storytelling — Jacob’s Cross, Soul Buddyz, Hillside, Erfsondes, 4Play: Sex Tips for Girls, The No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, Sticks and Stones, Isithunzi, Isibaya, The Road, Ashes to Ashes, Isithembiso, Dolly, and House of Zwide.

Mam’ Nandi also graced the big screen in films such as Saturday Night at the Palace (1987), Reasonable Man (1999), and the Oscar-nominated Yesterday (2004).

Her passing has left fans, colleagues, and the entire entertainment community devastated, with tributes pouring in across social media. Mam’ Nandi will be remembered not just for her talent, but for her resilience and impact on South African culture.
