South African television legend Nandi Nyembe will be laid to rest on Saturday at Westpark Cemetery in Randburg. The beloved actress, who passed away last week at the age of 75 after a long illness, was celebrated for her immense contributions to the arts and entertainment industry.

Nyembe captured the hearts of audiences through her powerful performances in Yizo Yizo, Soul City, Zone 14, Isibaya, and, more recently, Adulting. Her career spanned decades, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire younger generations of actors.

Thoko Ntshinga’s Heartfelt Tribute to Nandi Nyembe

At the funeral service held at Walter Sisulu Hall in Johannesburg, veteran actress Thoko Ntshinga shared an emotional tribute to her late colleague and long-time friend.

Ntshinga recalled first meeting Nyembe in the 1970s, describing her as a “multi-talented thespian” who was deeply committed to her craft.

“I don’t want to be talking to the government. We’ve spoken to the government, we have complained. We have asked. We have cried. I want to speak to the artists. When do we take ourselves seriously? If you feel you are going to be underpaid, don’t take the job,” said Ntshinga.

Beyond her tribute, Ntshinga used the moment to call on fellow artists to unite and confront the systemic challenges faced within the entertainment industry.

“Our industry is a job like any other job. But why is it that we allow ourselves to be ill-treated? We need to get together. If we are in the same job and we want to do something about it as ama-artist, do it as a collective,” she urged.

As the industry reflects on Nyembe’s life and legacy, her passing serves as a reminder of both the talent she brought to South African screens and the ongoing fight for better working conditions in the arts.
