Nandi Nyembe Gets Mzansi Support Amid Financial Challenges​

Veteran actress Nandi Nyembe, renowned for her extensive contributions to South Africa’s entertainment industry, has recently faced significant financial hardships. 

At 74, Nyembe continues to captivate audiences with her performances, notably in productions like “House of Zwide,” “Isibaya,” and “Adulting.” 

How Nandi Nyembe is Struggling Financially and Public Appeal

In a heartfelt video shared by Masingita Masunga of the Above Normal Foundation, Nandi opened up about her current challenges.

She disclosed that her financial difficulties intensified after spending approximately R88,000 on medical treatment for her son.

She said, “From the money I’ve worked for, my son got sick. I don’t have money. How are you going to get medical aid when you don’t have money?” 

Despite her situation, the veteran expressed a reluctance to seek charity, emphasizing her desire for work opportunities over handouts. “I don’t want a handout… Maybe some little groceries,” she remarked, highlighting her preference for maintaining independence. 

Government and Public Response to Nandi Nyembe’s Plight

The public’s reaction was swift and supportive, with many expressing a willingness to assist. Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, personally reached out to Nyembe, offering financial aid from his own funds. “I will send you something that will keep you until I see you,” McKenzie assured, expressing his intention to provide immediate support. 

Additionally, McKenzie addressed the broader issue, stating, “We will fix the plight of our artists, we are hard at work already, this is the dying days of suffering of our creatives.”
