Nafiz Modack Returns To Court As High-Profile Criminal Trial Resumes

Alleged underworld gang boss Nafiz Modack is expected back in the witness box at the Western Cape High Court on Monday, following a brief appearance last week.

Modack is facing 122 charges and is standing trial alongside 14 co-accused, all linked to crimes allegedly committed in the operation of a criminal enterprise.

Court proceedings were postponed last Monday after one of the defence attorneys fell ill, marking yet another delay in the long-running case.

Nafiz Modack Trial Delays Linked to Defence Attorney Illness

Modack’s legal representative, Advocate Bashier Sibda, was scheduled to continue re-examining his client after the state closed its case in November last year.

However, proceedings were again halted when the court was informed that defence attorney Advocate Pauline Andrews was hospitalised and receiving medical treatment.

Presiding Judge Robert Henney postponed the matter, noting that Andrews represents co-accused Petrus Visser and Amaal Jantjies, who are implicated in several of the same charges faced by Modack.

The court heard that Andrews’ presence is required to ensure her clients’ interests are protected should any potentially incriminating evidence emerge during Modack’s re-examination.

Judge Henney said he will reassess the situation when the case resumes on Monday.
