Nafiz Modack Declares Innocence As State Ends Lengthy Cross-Examination In High-Profile Trial

The prosecution in the high-profile trial of alleged underworld figure Nafiz Modack has completed its extensive cross-examination of the accused in the Western Cape High Court.

Modack, who is facing 122 charges linked to a range of alleged criminal activities, has spent 29 days under questioning. He is being tried alongside fourteen co-accused for allegedly running a criminal enterprise.

On Thursday, prosecutor Greg Wolmarans officially closed the State’s cross-examination of Modack, marking the end of a significant phase of the marathon trial.

State Alleges Nafiz Modack Company Was Used for Money Laundering

Wolmarans told the court that the State intends to argue Modack used Empire Investment Cars as a front to launder money. The funds were allegedly used to pay his co-accused—now on trial with him—to commit crimes on his behalf.

Modack has pleaded not guilty to all 122 charges. He maintains he is the target of a conspiracy involving his alleged underworld rival, Jerome “Donkie” Booysen, along with corrupt police officers.

Repeated Denials During Cross-Examination

During questioning, Wolmarans put it to Modack that he managed a criminal enterprise during 2019 and 2020.

Wolmarans: “During 2019 and 2020, you managed a criminal enterprise.”

Modack: “That’s not true, my Lord.”

Wolmarans further claimed Modack had engaged in offences including murders, attempted murders, corruption, and money laundering.

Wolmarans: “You indulged in crimes ranging from murders, multiple murders, attempted murders, corruption, money laundering.”

Modack: “That’s not true, my Lord.”

The matter has been postponed to January next year, when Modack’s legal team is expected to begin re-examination.
