Mystery Gun Search Continues In Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe Hyde Park Shooting Case As Gardener Remains Critical

Gauteng police are still searching for the firearm allegedly used in the Hyde Park shooting involving Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe.

Gauteng police are yet to recover the firearm allegedly used by Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, son of late Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe, in a shooting that left a 23-year-old gardener fighting for his life.

The victim remains in critical condition in hospital following the incident, which occurred on Thursday at a residence in the affluent Hyde Park suburb, north of Johannesburg, where Mugabe lives.

Authorities have confirmed that investigations are ongoing as officers work to piece together the events surrounding the shooting.

Police Intensify Search For Missing Firearm In Hyde Park Shooting

Speaking to reporters, Gauteng provincial police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed that the weapon has not yet been recovered. “The firearm has not been found,” she said.

She added that the investigation was continuing but declined to provide further details at this stage.

“We will not be commenting further on investigation progress unless or should there be an update worthy of being communicated,” she said.

Police deployed divers and a dog unit to comb the property in an effort to locate the missing firearm. During the search, officers recovered a cartridge, which will now form part of the forensic investigation.

“We did manage to find a cartridge, and that cartridge will form part of the investigation,” Nevhuhulwi said previously.

Two Suspects Questioned As Attempted Murder Charges Loom

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Gauteng confirmed that two men were taken in for questioning in connection with the shooting at the Hyde Park residence.

Nevhuhulwi described the circumstances as “still a bit sketchy”, noting that preliminary investigations were underway.

Two people aged between 33 and 24 were taken into custody. “They will be taken in for questioning so that we can determine what actually happened and what led to the shooting,” she said.

The suspects are expected to face charges of attempted murder. Police have confirmed that Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe and another suspect are due to appear at the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court in Johannesburg on Monday.

Meanwhile, the injured gardener, who was employed at the property, remains hospitalised in a critical condition.

“It was indicated that he is in a critical condition, but we are hoping that he will be fine,” Nevhuhulwi said.
