Ramadan Horror: Muslim Leader Moulana Mustaqeem Wanza Shot Dead After In Mitchells Plain

A respected Muslim religious leader was shot and killed on Wednesday night in Lentegeur, Mitchells Plain, shortly after leading Taraweeh prayers on the first evening of Ramadan.

Moulana Mustaqeem Wanza was attacked outside the Salaamudien Masjid following evening prayers.

In a statement, the Masjid Imaamat and Committee said: “At this stage, the Masjid Imaamat and Committee does not have any confirmed details regarding the circumstances of the incident. We will allow the relevant authorities to conduct a full investigation, and we trust due process will take its course.”

Community Pays Tribute to Muslim Leader

Tributes have poured in from religious bodies and community organisations across the Western Cape.

Aswaatul Islam described Wanza as “a deeply respected soul whose presence, guidance and kindness touched so many lives. His legacy, teachings and impact will never be forgotten.”

The Darul Ulama Association also honoured him, saying he was “a respected Alum whose melodious voice resounded in Masaajieds throughout the Western Cape and beyond.”

“He was an inspiration for many of our youth to persue the path of the Quraan.

“The incident took place as Moulana completed the leading of Salatul Taraweegh on the very first night of this Mubarak month of Ramadaan at the Salamudien Masjied New Lentegeur.”

Eight Shots Fired in Candytuft Street Attack

According to the Darul Ulama Association, the shooting occurred in Candytuft Street, Lentegeur, as Wanza was heading to the home of a colleague.

The group stated that the occupants of a white VW Polo allegedly stopped and shot him eight times before fleeing the scene.

Police are expected to investigate the fatal shooting.
