Municipality Employee Arrested For Damaging CCTV Camera Cables

An employee of the eThekwini municipality has been arrested for deliberately damaging newly upgraded cables that connect servers and feeds to security CCTV cameras.

The arrest follows an investigation conducted by the city’s disaster management unit, integrity investigation unit, and the police. The CCTV cameras are vital for monitoring and detecting crime and are linked to the city’s emergency service control room.

The municipality has taken the incident seriously and has opened a criminal case against the employee for theft, sabotage, and vandalism of municipal infrastructure.

Additionally, the employee has been served with a notice of immediate suspension. The municipality had recently undertaken a project to repair and upgrade CCTV cameras in the city center.

Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda expressed the municipality’s commitment to eliminating any form of criminal behaviour within its ranks. The city has adopted a zero-tolerance approach towards lawlessness and will not tolerate anyone compromising the safety of residents, visitors, and businesses.

Vincent Ngubane, the head of the city’s disaster management and services, emphasised that anyone found tampering or sabotaging municipal infrastructure, including CCTV cameras, will face arrest, regardless of whether they are employees of the municipality. Repairing damaged infrastructure is not only costly but also hampers the fight against crime.

The eThekwini municipality is determined to maintain the integrity of its infrastructure and ensure the safety of its community. By taking swift action against those who engage in criminal activities, the municipality sends a strong message that such behavior will not be tolerated.
