Multichoice To Shut Down Showmax Streaming Service After Strategic Review

MultiChoice, a CANAL+ company, has confirmed that it will discontinue its streaming platform, Showmax, after a comprehensive review of its streaming operations.

The announcement marks a major shift for the broadcaster as it reassesses its digital entertainment strategy in an increasingly competitive global streaming market.

The decision follows growing speculation that CANAL+ would introduce significant operational changes at MultiChoice.

Over the past few months, several adjustments have already emerged within the group, including programming and broadcasting decisions at SuperSport. The latest move signals a further step in reshaping the company’s streaming and content strategy.

Why Multichoice Decided To Discontinue Showmax

In a statement, the company said the move followed a detailed review of its streaming operations and reflects its focus on financial discipline and investment optimisation.

According to the statement, the streaming platform has recorded substantial annual losses that the group considers unsustainable.

“The substantial annual losses experienced by the Showmax business have proved unsustainable. The decision to phase out Showmax reflects our focus on building a sustainable, competitive business for the long term in an increasingly demanding global streaming environment,” read the statement.

What Happens To Showmax Subscribers And Staff

The development comes just over a year after the launch of Showmax 2.0 in February 2024, which introduced new subscription plans and expanded content offerings.

Despite the shutdown, MultiChoice said the decision would not result in job losses.

“The Group will be engaging and supporting employees through various transition options.”

Multichoice Plans A New Large-Scale Streaming Platform

The company added that the move forms part of its broader strategy to deploy an in-house streaming platform designed to meet the expectations of both African and international audiences.

MultiChoice said more details about future platform upgrades and content expansion will be announced later.

“We want to reassure our Showmax subscribers that they are our priority as we evolve our services to deliver a superior streaming experience.”
