Mugabe’s Son to Remain Behind Bars As Bail Hearing Set for March

Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, son of former Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe, will remain behind bars after making a brief appearance in the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Bellarmine appeared alongside his co-accused, Tobias Mugabe Mathondze. Both men were brought into court wearing leg shackles.

The matter was postponed to Tuesday, 3 March, when formal bail proceedings are expected to take place.

State Opposes Immediate Bail For Mugabe

During proceedings, the State indicated that the firearm allegedly used in the Hyde Park shooting has not yet been recovered.

Prosecutors opposed the pair’s immediate release, arguing that investigations are still under way and that key evidence — including the missing firearm — remains outstanding.

The court heard that the ongoing probe forms part of the reason for postponing the matter to allow for bail arguments to be properly presented next month.

Case Linked to Hyde Park Shooting

Bellarmine and Mathondze were arrested in connection with a shooting incident that took place in Hyde Park last week.

The case continues to draw public attention due to Mugabe’s high-profile family background.

Both accused are expected to remain in custody until their next court appearance on 3 March, when the court will hear arguments relating to bail.
