Mugabe’s Son Remanded Again After Alexandra Court Power Outage Delays Bail Hearing

The son of former Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, will remain in custody for at least another week following a postponed court appearance at the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on Thursday morning.

Mugabe and co-accused Tobias Mugabe Matonhodze face multiple charges, including attempted murder, possession of a firearm and ammunition, defeating the ends of justice, theft, pointing a firearm, and contravening the Immigration Act. The pair were expected to apply for bail during the hearing.

Court Postponed Due to Power Outage

Speaking to media outside court, his lawyer, Sinenhlanhla Mnguni, said the postponement was caused by a power outage at the magistrate’s court.

“It is quite disappointing. We were ready to proceed as of Monday last week. Of course, we understand these things are out of our hands,” Mnguni said.

He added that all outstanding documents and administrative matters had been settled this week, and the only step remaining is to take instructions from his client.

Mnguni also noted that while his client may be frustrated to spend another week in custody, he understands that the delay is beyond his control. The Alexandra Magistrate’s Court has reportedly been without electricity for the entire week.

Allegations Against Mugabe and Matonhodze

The duo is accused of shooting a 23-year-old employee of Mugabe’s at his Hyde Park residence in February, leaving the victim in critical condition.

It remains unclear whether Mugabe and Matonhodze are in South Africa legally, with the State expected to clarify their immigration status once the pair can appear in the dock.

The case has now been postponed to Wednesday, 11 March 2026, when the matter is expected to proceed.
