Mthethwa’s Son Honours Late Father As A ‘Man Of Virtue’ During Emotional Farewell

The children of the late South African ambassador to France, Nathi Mthethwa, have paid moving tribute to their father, describing him as a man of virtue, wisdom, and compassion.

Mthethwa, who served his country with distinction, was remembered at his funeral as a man whose influence stretched far beyond his official titles.

Speaking on behalf of the family, his son Mkhululi Mthethwa shared heartfelt words that captured the essence of their father’s enduring legacy.

“Where does one begin to bid farewell to you, Nyambose…a person who was so much more than the title of being a father,” he said.

“In times of loss and misdirection, you were our compass, a fountain for those who seek the test of knowledge, a shelter from the storm, and at times, the storm itself.

“As your children, we know and understand that you did all you could to prepare us for the realities of this world. Perhaps the reality that brings us here today might be the one lesson we have missed.”

Mkhululi described his father as “a man of virtue, integrity, courage, and honesty,” adding that his presence would be deeply missed.

Leaders and Loved Ones Gather to Honour a Statesman

Mourners gathered at the Siyabonga Sangweni Sports Complex in Kwambonambi, KwaZulu-Natal, to pay their final respects.

Among those in attendance were dignitaries, political figures, and representatives from various cultural and religious groups, all united in remembering Mthethwa’s life and service.

Phumelele Gwala, South Africa’s ambassador to Argentina, reflected on Mthethwa’s multifaceted life, describing him as an “activist who also loved theatre and sports.”

His passion for the arts and community engagement remained an integral part of his identity even as he rose through the ranks of public service.

A Family’s Farewell to Their Pillar of Strength

Mthethwa’s personal life was celebrated with the same reverence as his public service. He married Philisiwe Buthelezi-Mthethwa on 16 February 2013, a union described as one grounded in love, respect, and mutual support.

“Nyambose tied the knot with the love of his life, Ms Philisiwe Buthelezi-Mthethwa, who will remember him as a nurturer, warrior and refuge,” said the family.

“His children – Mkhululi, Mxolisi, Nombuso, Senzekile, Ayanda and Zinathi – have lost not only a father but a teacher, a pillar whose many lessons he bequeathed in his lifetime.”

As family, friends, and colleagues bid their final farewell, they remembered Nathi Mthethwa not only as a diplomat and activist but as a man whose moral compass and gentle strength left a lasting imprint on all who knew him.
