“Nothing Can Quench The Fire You’ve Lit In My Soul”: Mthethwa’s Wife Tearful Tribute To Late Husband Nathi

Tears filled the eyes of mourners as Philisiwe Mthethwa, widow of the late Ambassador to France, Nathi Mthethwa, honoured her husband with a touching message during his special official funeral in KwaMbonambi, KwaZulu-Natal.

Overcome with grief, Philisiwe asked a relative to read her final words to the man she called “the love of her life.”

“I cannot ask God why, for love this great can never be explained nor measured by time. I ask only that he cradle you gently, that he keeps you close until the day I may be in your midst again. You are my sunshine, my eternal flame, and though death has hidden you from my eyes, nothing can quench the fire you’ve lit in my soul,” read Nolitha Fakude on her behalf.

A Life Remembered with Love and Honour

Family, friends, and comrades came together to celebrate the life of a man described as cultured, kind, nurturing, and courageous. Though his untimely death — after a tragic fall from the 22nd floor of a Paris hotel — left deep sorrow, his legacy was honoured with dignity and affection.

The late ambassador was remembered as a devoted family man whose laughter and calm spirit filled his home. His loved ones, still grappling with immense pain, reflected on his warmth and the strength he brought into their lives.

Mkhululi Mthethwa, his son, spoke with pride about the lessons his father instilled in them — teaching humility, strength, and pride. These values, he said, were woven into their family’s lineage tied to King Dingiswayo.

“You have been a shining example to your children, the grandchildren, the community, our nation and the world at large. Hamba Kahle, Nkonyane! Mthethwa! Mthethwa! Mthethwa!” he said, before pausing to embrace his grieving mother.

As loved ones said their final goodbyes, Nathi’s enduring love, laughter, and legacy remained with those he left behind.
