Mthethwa Family Works With Dirco To Repatriate Late Ambassador’s Remains Amid Investigation

The family of the late former South African ambassador to France, Nathi Mthethwa, confirmed they are working closely with the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) to repatriate his remains.

Plans are underway for a memorial and funeral service in his honour.

Mthethwa, 58, was found dead on Tuesday, 30 September, after falling from the 22nd floor of the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Paris. French authorities have launched an investigation and say no possibility — including foul play — has been ruled out.

Family spokesperson Dr Sfiso Buthelezi said, “Once formal processes are complete, we will work closely with Dirco to bring Nathi home for a memorial and funeral worthy of his legacy.”

Family Demands Answers on Circumstances of Death

A relative of Mthethwa has travelled to France seeking clarity on the events that led to his death. Dirco spokesperson Chrispin Phiri confirmed that at the time of the incident, Mthethwa did not have a protection detail, explaining, “Ambassadors do not have security.”

Some family members expressed dissatisfaction with how they were notified of his passing.

His brother, Khulekani, told the SABC, “He has been a member of the ANC since his youth. We expected them to come here and explain to us what led to his death. We wish for them to come and meet us as a family and tell us what happened.”

The family in KwaZulu-Natal said they remain shocked by the sudden news and have appealed to both the ANC and government for more information.

Tributes and Support From Leaders and Public

Despite their grief, the family has expressed gratitude for the support they have received. “The passing of our beloved Nathi — a devoted husband, father, brother, and South African Ambassador to Paris — has left a void beyond words. Yet your messages of condolence have brought comfort in our grief,” Buthelezi said.

He further extended appreciation to President Cyril Ramaphosa, Deputy President Paul Mashatile, Cabinet ministers, Dirco, the ANC, and the French authorities for their cooperation during the ongoing investigation.

ANC spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu confirmed the party has been in contact with the family following the tragedy.

Mthethwa’s career spanned several key government positions. He served as Minister of Safety and Security (2008–2009), Minister of Police (2009–2014), Minister of Arts and Culture (2014–2019), and Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture (2019–2023).
