Mpumalanga Man Arrested After Missing 7-Year-Old Girl Found Dead In Mealie Field

Police in Mpumalanga have arrested a 21-year-old man accused of kidnapping, raping and murdering a seven-year-old girl in Charl Cilliers.
The child was reported missing on Sunday, prompting an urgent search by officers and community members. Her body was later discovered in a nearby mealie field.
Authorities confirmed that the suspect was taken into custody after investigators linked him to the incident.
Mpumalanga Search operation leads to grim discovery
According to Mavela Masondo, spokesperson for the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga, police immediately launched a coordinated search operation after receiving the missing person report.
Specialised police units were deployed to assist in locating the child. “Police received a complaint about a missing child and immediately activated police units, including crime intelligence, K9 and detectives, to search for the child.”

The search effort also drew support from private security companies, local farmers and members of the community policing forum in the area.
“The search led to the discovery of the child’s clothes dumped near the mealie field. Further investigation resulted in the arrest of the suspect, who led police to the mealie field where the child’s body was found,” Masondo said.
Suspect expected to appear in court
The arrested man is expected to appear before the Secunda Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
Police have not released further details about the case as investigations continue.
The tragic discovery has shocked residents in the farming community, where the search for the missing child quickly mobilised both authorities and local volunteers.
