Mpumalanga Cash-In-Transit Death Sparks Murder Investigation After Viral Video

Police in Mpumalanga have opened a murder investigation following the death of a 28-year-old man who was allegedly run over by a cash-in-transit vehicle in Bushbuckridge.

The incident, which took place earlier this week, has drawn widespread attention after graphic footage circulated on social media platforms.

Authorities said the circumstances surrounding the incident are still under investigation, although preliminary information suggests the deceased allegedly attempted to rob the cash-in-transit van while armed with a sharp object.

The deceased has been identified by relatives as Eugene Thabiso Mashego from Graskop in Shatale, Bushbuckridge.

Cash-In-Transit Attack In Bushbuckridge Under Police Investigation

According to police, the cash-in-transit van was occupied by two security officers and had stopped in Bushbuckridge while one of the guards went into a nearby shop.

Police spokesperson Donald Mdhluli said the situation escalated when a man allegedly opened the passenger-side door and attacked the security officer who remained inside the vehicle.

“It is further reported that some security officers became aware of what was happening and are said to have fired shots at the alleged attacker, who fell to the ground. It is further alleged that the driver of the cash-in-transit vehicle subsequently drove over the man, who was later certified dead at the scene,” said Mdhluli.

Mpumalanga police have appealed to the public to stop circulating the disturbing footage linked to the incident.

Authorities warned that sharing the video could deepen the trauma experienced by the families involved, as well as expose sensitive viewers to distressing content.
