Mozambican Man Sentenced To 18 Years For Attempted Rape And Murder Of Joburg Woman

The Gauteng Division of the High Court in Johannesburg has sentenced a Mozambican national to 18 years behind bars for the attempted rape and murder of Nompumelelo Manana, who was killed on 11 May 2024 in Lyndhurst.
According to court findings, a security officer was patrolling the area that night when he heard screams near a powerhouse.
Upon investigating, he discovered the accused lying on top of Manana. Both were naked, and the victim had already succumbed to her injuries. The officer swiftly called the police, who arrested the suspect at the scene.

During sentencing, Senior State Advocate Faghre Mohamed urged the court to impose a stern punishment, stating that the accused had shown no remorse and that the crime warranted a strong deterrent.
The presiding judge emphasised the ongoing crisis of gender-based violence in South Africa and the need to protect vulnerable women.
The accused was handed 15 years for murder and 5 years for attempted rape, with two years ordered to run concurrently — resulting in an effective sentence of 18 years’ imprisonment.
Authorities hailed the conviction as a testament to the dedication of both investigators and prosecutors. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said the outcome reflected its unwavering commitment to delivering justice in gender-based violence cases nationwide.
