Mossel Bay Teen’s Death Under Investigation As Family Speaks Out “His Fault Was Being Tsonga”

Western Cape police are searching for the suspect who allegedly stabbed 19-year-old Nhlamulo Sambo to death in KwaNonqaba, Mossel Bay, on Sunday.

According to police, the teenager was killed following an altercation with another man. However, his family has disputed the circumstances surrounding the attack, claiming he was targeted during unrest reportedly linked to protests against foreign nationals.

Police have not confirmed the family’s allegations and say investigations into the incident are ongoing.

Police Investigate Fatal Stabbing Of Nhlamulo Sambo In Mossel Bay

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Christopher Spies said officers responded to the scene after receiving reports of a stabbing.

Spies said the teenager was found with a stab wound to the chest.

“He was declared dead by paramedics on scene. The suspect fled the scene. He is yet to be arrested,” said Spies.

Police have opened a murder investigation and are working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the killing.

Family Claims Teen Was Mistaken For A Foreigner

Sambo’s family has alleged that he was killed during unrest linked to anti-foreigner protests in the area.

In a video shared online, his mother, Nkateko Sambo, said her son was a South African citizen from Giyani in Limpopo.

“They killed my son like a dog saying that he’s a foreigner whereas my child is a Tsonga, a South African citizen from Limpopo in Giyani,” she said.

The grieving mother also appealed for financial assistance to help transport her son’s body to Limpopo for burial.

“I’m very hurt and painful because I’m unemployed and they killed my child and I have to take my child back home to bury him on Saturday,” she said.

Calls For Justice After Death Of Nhlamulo Sambo

In a social media post, Sambo’s sister, Nonhlanhla Sambo, claimed her brother was attacked because he spoke Xitsonga.

“My 19-year-old little brother was stabbed to death on the 31st of May during the xenophobic riots/protests in Western Cape Mossel Bay his fault was being Tsonga in a Xhosa community we are deeply hurt as family about this inhumane act; justice must be served. We will not be silent.”

At this stage, police have not verified the family’s claims regarding the motive for the attack.

Investigators continue to search for the suspect, who remains at large.
