Shocking Scandal: Mossel Bay Police Officer Granted Bail Amid 323 Fraud Charges

A Mossel Bay police officer has been released on R3 000 bail as she faces a staggering 323 counts of fraud, alongside charges of corruption, intimidation, and defeating the administration of justice.

Lauriane Botha was granted bail with strict conditions by the George Specialised Crimes Court following her latest court appearance.

Mountain of Charges Against Police Officer

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila confirmed that Botha was formally charged and summoned to appear before court in Great Brak River.

According to the State, Botha failed to attend her first scheduled court appearance on October 28, 2025, citing illness. The matter was postponed to allow her to be present and to make representations to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

However, prosecutors allege that shortly before her January 2026 appearance, Botha tracked down the complainant in the fraud case and attempted to persuade him to withdraw the charges.

Ntabazalila said she allegedly promised to buy the complainant items and threatened him with imprisonment. At the time, she was reportedly in full South African Police Service uniform and driving a police vehicle.

Text Message Raises Red Flags

Before February 10, 2026, Botha allegedly sent a message to the investigating officer claiming the complainant wished to withdraw the charges. This communication reportedly triggered further investigation, ultimately leading to her arrest.

She made her first appearance at the Mossel Bay Magistrate’s Court on February 23, where bail was set at R3 000.

As part of her bail conditions, Botha is prohibited from contacting State witnesses.

Her case has been postponed to Friday, when the fraud charges and the newer allegations are expected to be consolidated.

The unfolding case has sent shockwaves through the local community, raising serious questions about accountability within law enforcement ranks.
