Two Die As Mortuary Vehicle Carrying Corpse Slams Into Tree, Bursts Into Flames

A bizarre and tragic accident unfolded in Springs, Ekurhuleni, when a mortuary vehicle carrying a corpse crashed into a tree and caught fire, killing the driver and a passenger.

City of Ekurhuleni spokesperson Zweli Dlamini confirmed that Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) officers responded to the crash on Clydesdale Road on Thursday.

“Upon arrival, officers found emergency responders already at the scene and discovered the mortuary vehicle engulfed in flames, with the driver still inside,” said Dlamini.

The second victim, a passenger, was found lying outside next to a large fallen tree. Paramedics declared both individuals dead at the scene.

Superstition or Tragic Coincidence?

According to initial reports, the mortuary vehicle had just collected a body from the hospital when the passenger requested a detour to the location where the deceased had died—believed to be a ritual to “take his spirit home”.

However, during this detour, the driver lost control, crashing the vehicle into a tree before it erupted into flames.

While emergency services worked to secure the scene, investigators have not ruled out possible causes such as speeding, mechanical failure, or other external factors.

The strange circumstances surrounding the crash have left many questioning whether it was a tragic coincidence or something more eerie.
