More Organisations Join SA Demonstrations Honouring GBVF Victims

More organisations across South Africa have stepped forward to take part in demonstrations honouring victims of gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF).

Women for Change, a non-profit organisation, is leading a national shutdown on Friday as part of a broader social movement aimed at amplifying the voices of affected communities. The summit will also pay tribute to all victims of GBVF.

Crowds have gathered at Constitutional Hill in Johannesburg, where the summit is being held, standing in solidarity with survivors and families impacted by abuse.

One participant, Kearabetswe Moopelo, said the intention is to elevate the message beyond South Africa’s borders.

“So, we want to take this opportunity to not make it just a national shutdown but let it be a global shutdown. Have our global organisations amplify the issue and maybe start a fire, hopefully start a fire in all the other places. We’re definitely including it in our declaration process.”

Growing National Support for GBVF Activism

The shutdown has drawn increasing support from advocacy groups, civil society members and citizens who want to see meaningful action taken against the country’s high levels of GBVF.

Many attendees say collective pressure is essential to push for accountability and systemic change.

Organisers hope the demonstrations will gain international traction. Their aim is for international bodies and partners to draw attention to South Africa’s crisis and support efforts to combat GBVF on a wider scale.
