Modack Trial: State Claims Kilian Followed Identical Tracking Pattern In Kinnear And Booth Cases

The prosecution in the high-profile trial of Nafiz Modack and his 14 co-accused has argued that Zane Kilian followed an identical pattern when monitoring targets allegedly on Modack’s instruction.

Modack and the group face 122 charges, including murder, extortion, fraud, and money laundering, relating to a series of crimes dating back several years.

On Tuesday, prosecutors continued their cross-examination of Modack, focusing on his alleged role in the killing of top detective Charl Kinnear.

State Highlights Similarities in Tracking of Kinnear and Booth

State prosecutor Greg Wolmarans presented evidence showing how Kilian used the same tracking approach when monitoring attorney William Booth and later Kinnear.

According to the state, Modack orchestrated both the attempted murder of Booth and the murder of Kinnear by relying on Kilian to trace their movements.

Evidence before the court suggests Kilian “pinged” both men repeatedly shortly before each came under attack in separate incidents in 2020.

“Kilian, as the pinger is clearly in cahoots with the shooter on the ground. In both the Booth instance and the Kinnear instance,” Wolmarans told the court.

When questioned about these actions, Modack responded, “Only Kilian can answer that, my lord.”

Further evidence shows that Kilian and his then-lawyer, Eric Bryer, received payments exceeding R200,000 around the time Kinnear was murdered, raising additional concerns for the prosecution as the case progresses.
