Modack Trial: SAPS Captain Grilled Over Alleged Links To Underworld Boss

Alfred Barker, a captain in the South African Police Service, is set to return to the Western Cape High Court on Wednesday for further cross-examination. He is being questioned by the State regarding his alleged relationship with Nafiz Modack, who is currently on trial facing 122 charges linked to the alleged operation of a criminal enterprise.

Modack Claims Plot to Expose Senior Police Figures

Modack has maintained that Barker was involved in a plan to expose senior police officials and underworld figures who were allegedly working against him.

However, Barker rejected this claim during proceedings on Tuesday, telling the court that his involvement was limited to investigating the allegations made by Modack.

State prosecutor Blaine Lazarus questioned Barker about claims that Modack alleged he had been given instructions on how to expose senior officers Jeremy Vearey and the late Charl Kinnear.

Barker told the court he was never part of any plan to expose the officers and was simply conducting an investigation.

Judge Suggests Captain Was Misled

Presiding Judge Robert Henney told Barker that the evidence before the court suggested he may have been misled.

“Facts were not given to you… facts were withheld… you were misled. You were never told about the other payments. He lets you open a docket.”

The matter has been adjourned, with Barker expected to return to the stand as the State continues with its cross-examination.
