Modack Trial Resumes As Court Probes Cellphone Evidence In Kinnear Murder Case

The high-profile trial of alleged underworld figure Nafiz Modack returns to the Western Cape High Court on Monday, where cross-examination is set to continue.

Proceedings pick up after a week in which prosecutors presented extensive cellphone evidence outlining how slain anti-gang detective Charl Kinnear was tracked in the hours leading up to his murder.

Modack, along with 14 co-accused, faces 122 charges, including the killing of Kinnear outside his Bishop Lavis home five years ago.

Modack Trial: Cellphone Tracking Evidence Under Scrutiny

State prosecutor Greg Wolmarans last week introduced screenshots obtained from the phone of co-accused Zane Kilian. The images reportedly showed how Kilian tracked Kinnear’s movements.

According to the evidence, Kilian repeatedly pinged Kinnear’s location and then used Google Maps to calculate the detective’s estimated travel time back to his home.

Wolmarans also presented cellphone company records suggesting that Modack used various phone numbers to communicate with Kilian.

Modack rejected this claim, telling the court that his brother and co-accused, Yaseen Modack, had also been using his phone during that period.
