Members of the Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), Verulam SAPS, and several private security companies were dispatched to the scene following reports of the attack.

First responders discovered that the crowd had dragged the man to a nearby soccer field, where the assault occurred.

“The suspect was surrounded by community members who accused him of multiple burglaries,” a RUSA spokesperson said. Authorities noted that the mob had gone to the suspect’s home after receiving information about his alleged activities.

Stolen Items Recovered, Suspect Detained
During the confrontation, the crowd recovered a box containing identity documents and broken cellphones, believed to belong to burglary victims. At the time, no formal complainant had registered a case or verified the ownership of the recovered items.

The Verulam SAPS has since detained the suspect for further investigation. Police continue to urge community members to report criminal activity through official channels rather than taking the law into their own hands.
