Police Commissioner Mkhwanazi Sues Paul O’Sullivan For R5 Million Over Defamation

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, has filed a R5 million defamation lawsuit against well-known forensic investigator Paul O’Sullivan, accusing him of making damaging allegations that tarnished his name.

According to court documents lodged at the Johannesburg High Court last week, Mkhwanazi is seeking damages for statements O’Sullivan allegedly made through various media platforms earlier this year.

The police commissioner claims he asked O’Sullivan to retract his remarks and issue a public apology. However, after receiving no response, he turned to legal action.

Allegations of Misconduct and Links to Crime

The summons outlines three instances where O’Sullivan allegedly defamed Mkhwanazi. The claims include misappropriation of police funds during his tenure as acting national commissioner, acceptance of luxury gifts from a service provider, and allegations that he is a criminal with ties to organised crime.

O’Sullivan’s remarks also implicated Crime Intelligence head Dumisani Khumalo and National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola, further escalating tensions within the law enforcement community.

O’Sullivan Responds to Legal Action

In a brief statement issued on Tuesday, O’Sullivan confirmed he would not address the matter publicly, arguing it was sub judice.

However, he insisted he possesses evidence to support his claims. “I intend to share it with the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry,” O’Sullivan said, signaling that the dispute could extend beyond the courtroom.
