Mkhwanazi Intervenes As Clan Land Dispute Sparks Rising Tensions In Dukuduku

KwaZulu-Natal’s top police official, Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, has moved to calm a volatile land dispute in northern KZN, stepping in as tensions between two traditional clans continue to rise.

The intervention follows weeks of threats and confrontations between the abaKhwanazi and Ncube clans in the Dukuduku area.

The dispute intensified after King Misuzulu kaZwelithini appointed businessman Qiniso Ncube as his overseer in October, assigning him authority over vast land portions, including areas within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park.

Inkosi Ntokozo Mkhwanazi of the abaKhwanazi clan is firmly opposing the king’s decision, insisting that the land historically belongs to his people.

Earlier this month, protesters believed to be aligned with the abaKhwanazi clan blockaded the N2 in Mtubatuba in direct defiance of the king’s appointment.

Five izinduna have reportedly been killed in Dukuduku since the conflict escalated, further deepening fears of ongoing violence.

KZN Land Conflict Intensifies After King Misuzulu’s Appointment

On Sunday, Mkhwanazi joined Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) MEC Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi and the House of Traditional Leaders chairperson, Inkosi Sifiso Shinga, for a community imbizo meant to restore calm and encourage peaceful engagement.

Despite cold and rainy conditions, community members turned out in significant numbers, underlining the urgency and gravity of the dispute.

The imbizo aims to address community anxieties, reduce hostilities and create a pathway toward resolving the long-standing territorial claims.

Authorities say their immediate focus is to prevent further bloodshed while urging both clans to pursue lawful and peaceful channels as the matter unfolds.
