Mkhwanazi Faces Questions On Family Safety Amid Probe Into Police Corruption

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, says he does not view his family’s safety as more important than that of other South African families.
Testifying before Parliament’s ad hoc committee on national security for a second day, Mkhwanazi maintained that protection for his loved ones falls under the same police structures as everyone else.

The committee was established to investigate allegations of criminal infiltration, corruption, and political interference within South Africa’s criminal justice system — claims that Mkhwanazi first raised in July.
When questioned about his family’s safety, Mkhwanazi stated:
“Safety of my family is the responsibility of men and women in blue, who don’t have money to hire bodyguards, so safety is only guaranteed by men and women in blue. Their safety and vulnerability apply to the rest of the family; no special provisions for them.”
Committee Probes Allegations of Police Corruption and Interference
On Tuesday, the top cop’s testimony was guided by Advocate Norman Arendse, while on Wednesday, committee members continued their questioning. The inquiry aims to uncover the extent of alleged interference within the South African Police Service (SAPS) and related government institutions.

Mkhwanazi’s earlier claims pointed to political meddling and unlawful access to confidential police data, prompting Parliament to initiate this investigation.
Businessman’s Ties to Suspended Police Minister Under Scrutiny
During Wednesday’s session, Mkhwanazi focused on businessman Brown Mogotsi, alleging his close relationship with suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu.
He testified that Mogotsi had access to sensitive police documents and operational information, raising red flags about potential breaches of security and political influence over police operations.
Despite expressing concern for his family’s well-being, the police chief reaffirmed his trust in SAPS officers, saying he believes the “men and women in blue” will continue to uphold their duty to protect.
