Mkhwanazi Claims Dumisani Khumalo’s Arrest Was A Political “Project” To Derail Crime Intelligence

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has alleged that the arrest of Crime Intelligence boss Dumisani Khumalo was not a legitimate law enforcement action but a calculated political “project” aimed at derailing crucial reforms within Crime Intelligence.

Speaking before Parliament’s ad hoc committee investigating police corruption claims, Mkhwanazi said the move to arrest Khumalo was designed to disrupt ongoing investigations and reform efforts.

“Khumalo’s arrest is a project. It’s a project to counter the criminal investigation in Gauteng. This letter of the minister, the closure of the task team, it’s a project,” the police boss told the committee on Tuesday.

Claims of a Wider Effort to Undermine Investigations

Mkhwanazi further alleged that the “project” extended beyond Khumalo’s arrest, targeting the disbanding of the political killings task team. He said the intention was to halt criminal probes, particularly those linked to powerful crime syndicates operating in Gauteng.

The police commissioner emphasised that the disbanding of the unit was part of a coordinated effort to shield influential figures from investigation. “The political killings task team was a mistaken target because those implicated were under the wrong impression that it was also investigating crime in Gauteng,” Mkhwanazi said.

The revelations come after Mkhwanazi’s earlier testimony at the Madlanga Commission two weeks ago, where he similarly claimed that Khumalo’s arrest was orchestrated to hinder investigations into high-level criminal networks.

During his appearance before Parliament, Mkhwanazi reiterated that the arrest and related actions were politically motivated moves aimed at stopping ongoing reforms within the Crime Intelligence division and silencing effective investigative teams.

The ad hoc committee continues to hear evidence into allegations of police corruption and political interference within the South African Police Service (SAPS).
