KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi made an unexpected move on the first day of the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, carrying his own bottled water into the courtroom.

Video clips quickly went viral on social media, with users speculating on the top cop’s cautious gesture.

The commission, held at the Brigitte Mabandla Justice College in Pretoria, is investigating allegations of political interference in South Africa’s criminal justice system.

On arrival, Mkhwanazi placed his personal water in front of him and ignored bottles offered by hospitality staff—a subtle act that caught the attention of X users.

The cautious approach may reflect genuine security concerns. After a major media briefing in July, National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola confirmed that Mkhwanazi had received threats against his life.

Protective measures were reportedly increased, including enhanced security at the commissioner’s family home.

Adding to the intrigue, Mkhwanazi also avoided a handshake with an official, opting for a fist pump instead.
