Mkhwanazi And Lerutla Granted R30,000 Bail In Ekurhuleni Fraud And Corruption Case

Suspended Ekurhuleni Deputy Metro Police Chief Julius Mkhwanazi and City Manager Kagiso Lerutla have each been granted bail of R30,000.

The two appeared in the Boksburg Magistrates Court facing charges of fraud, corruption, and defeating the ends of justice, in a case that has attracted widespread public attention.

Alleged R400,000 Impersonation Scheme Explained

The State alleges that the case dates back to 2019, when Mkhwanazi’s driver, Thabang Tsotetsi, was allegedly paid to impersonate Lerutla in court.

It is claimed that the R400,000 payment was shared between Tsotetsi and Mkhwanazi, forming the basis of the charges now before the court.

Court Considers Mkhwanazi and Lerutla’s Risk of Interference

Magistrate Emmanuel Magampa noted that the State’s argument—that the accused might interfere with investigations and witnesses—could not be viewed in isolation.

Earlier, Mkhwanazi’s attorney, Masekela Masenya, argued that both men were willing to comply with strict bail conditions.

“We are of the strong view that we really submitted a compelling case. We just have to wait for the magistrate to come up with a decision. I cannot be confident. The matter is still waiting for judgment. So, we’ll be happy if he goes our way.

“If it doesn’t go our way, we’ll get instructions from the client. We don’t have instructions there yet. We don’t have instructions to do anything except wait for the bail outcome.”
