MK Party Will Become The Official Opposition In National Assembly

The Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) party is set to become the official opposition in the National Assembly. This significant development follows the inclusion of the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Government of National Unity (GNU).

As the DA transitions to a role within the national executive, the MK party, currently the third largest in the assembly, will assume the position of the official opposition.

The decision to designate the MK party as the official opposition was made during a meeting of the National Assembly’s rules committee last night.

Parliamentary spokesperson Moloto Mothapo explained that while the definition of official opposition will receive further consideration, the MK party will indeed take on this role.

This change in status is a result of the DA leader John Steenhuisen joining the government, leaving the position of the official opposition leader to MK’s parliamentary leader, John Hlophe.

Regarding Rise Mzansi, which is also part of the GNU but not serving in the executive, their role will be further clarified.

They hold a portfolio committee chairperson position, and it remains to be seen whether they will be considered part of the opposition or the GNU coalition.

This clarification is essential for understanding the new dynamics within the National Assembly and the opposition’s composition.

Meanwhile, President Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver the opening address of Parliament at 7 PM this evening at the Cape Town City Hall.

This event, marking the seventh official opening of Parliament, will be held under the theme, “My Parliament, My Voice, My Future.” In his address, President Ramaphosa is expected to outline the key priorities and policies of the current administration.
