MK Party Fallout: Hlophe, Manyi Clash Over SONA Speech

Tensions within the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party are escalating as Chief Whip Mzwanele Manyi and caucus leader Dr John Hlophe find themselves at odds over a controversial SONA debate speech.

Allegations of Sabotage

According to party insiders, Hlophe was allegedly handed a last-minute speech that was “poorly crafted,” replacing his original prepared remarks. Some claim this was a deliberate move to embarrass him, falsely attributing the instruction to MK Party leader Jacob Zuma.

Manyi was reportedly confronted by the MKP parliamentary caucus over the speech’s quality, defending himself by saying it was written by Floyd Shivambu and passed on as instructed.

Ramaphosa Unimpressed with SONA Debate

Meanwhile, President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed disappointment with the overall quality of the SONA debate, saying MPs focused too much on party politics instead of constructive solutions.

“Some speakers held firm to the denialism and distortions demanded by their party positions,” Ramaphosa said, warning that ideological divisions hinder national unity.

He emphasised the need for meaningful debate, tying the issue to the upcoming national dialogue, which aims to address South Africa’s challenges through broader discussions.

Hlophe’s Speech Sparks Criticism

During his speech, Hlophe praised Jacob Zuma as South Africa’s most successful president, rejecting the “nine wasted years” narrative. He claimed Zuma’s leadership ensured service delivery, unlike Ramaphosa’s alleged empty promises.

ANC MPs dismissed his remarks, calling them a weak opposition speech. Some stated, “the less said about his speech, the better.”

Ramaphosa, however, acknowledged that some MPs recognised the ANC’s achievements over the past 30 years, emphasising that progress belongs to the people, not individual leaders.
