Mitchells Plain Mom Furious After Teacher Laughed As Six Matrics Allegedly Beat Grade 8 Boy In Class

A Mitchells Plain mother has expressed outrage after her Grade 8 son was allegedly attacked by six matric pupils inside a classroom at Lentegeur High School — claiming a teacher sat on his phone and laughed while the assault unfolded.

The shocking incident allegedly took place during a class change on 24 February and has left the teen traumatised and afraid to return to school.

According to the mother, her son had just entered his next class when six matric boys stormed in and began assaulting him.

“This happened during a change of classes, and when he got to his next class, six matriculant boys came into the class and they assaulted him,” she said.

She claims the attack happened directly in front of an educator.

“This teacher didn’t do anything; he didn’t stop them. He just sat there on his phone laughing at what happened.”

She further alleges that after the boys left, the teacher asked her son to sit next to him. However, minutes later, one of the boys returned and assaulted him again.

“Only then did he chase the boys out of his class,” she added.

Alleged Threats to Stab Him

The mother said there was no clear reason why her son was targeted, although she suspects it may have stemmed from false information spread by another learner.

She also claims the situation escalated after school.

“Our family phoned us in the afternoon, saying that our son had to run away after school due to this incident,” she said.

According to her, the alleged attackers later approached another family member who attends the school and threatened to stab her son if they found him.

When she went to the school the next day, the mother said she was shocked to learn that the principal was allegedly unaware of the incident.

“The teacher never reported the matter to the principal or us as parents,” she said.

After the matter was formally reported, the principal allegedly advised that her son remain at home for three days for his safety.

Police and WCED Investigations Underway

Police spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala confirmed that South African Police Service in Lentegeur are investigating a case of assault common.

“According to the complainant, her son was assaulted inside a classroom by a group of about six learners. The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation; no arrest has been made yet,” said Gwala.

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) said it has been informed of the alleged incident.

Spokesperson Bronagh Hammond confirmed that disciplinary procedures have been initiated and that the matter is being investigated by the school’s disciplinary committee. Allegations regarding the teacher have also been referred to the WCED’s Labour Relations directorate. “All forms of abuse must be reported,” Hammond said.

The family says their priority is ensuring the teen’s safety and accountability for those involved, as the investigation continues.
