Miss SA Qhawekazi Mazaleni Pledges To Tackle Unemployment And Boost Literacy Among Youth

Newly crowned Miss South Africa 2025, Qhawekazi Mazaleni, has vowed to use her reign to confront one of the nation’s toughest challenges — the persistent cycle of unemployment.

The 24-year-old, who earned the prestigious title in October, has already begun championing causes close to her heart. Mazaleni said she aims to motivate young people across the country while addressing the deeper social and educational issues that fuel joblessness.

She believes that South Africa needs to shift its approach to unemployment by examining its root causes rather than treating its visible effects.

Her focus currently lies in promoting literacy and access to books, areas she believes are essential for empowering young people and driving long-term change.

“I think one of the biggest challenges is possibly a lack of hope. Just because we see our statistics like our unemployment statistics.

“Looking at our GBV [gender-based violence] statistics, as well as our illiteracy statistics, it makes it difficult for our youth to be able to actually dream and feel as though they can achieve those dreams,” Mazaleni said.

Through her platform, the Eastern Cape-born beauty queen hopes to reignite optimism among young South Africans, urging them not to lose sight of their potential despite the country’s socio-economic struggles.

Encouraging the youth to remain persistent and resilient, she added, “Pursue your dreams wholeheartedly.

“Even if sometimes you might think that it might not work out, there’s always something that you’ll be able to learn from whatever situation that you put yourself in, so don’t be afraid to try.”

Mazaleni’s inspiring message is already resonating with many, as she sets out to make her mark as a role model and advocate for youth empowerment through education and literacy.
