Veteran Actress And Miss SA Pioneer Cynthia Shange Has Died At 76

Veteran South African actress and former beauty queen Cynthia Shange has died at the age of 76.

Her family confirmed that she passed away in the early hours of Monday, 20 April 2026, at a hospital in KwaZulu-Natal following an illness.

In a statement, the family described Shange as a “legendary figure in South African arts and culture” who made a lasting contribution as both a beauty queen and actress.

Shange rose to national prominence in 1972 when she won the Miss Black South Africa title, becoming the first Black woman to hold a Miss South Africa-linked crown during the apartheid era.

Her achievement marked a historic moment in South African pageantry, at a time when competitions were still racially segregated.

Beyond pageantry, Shange built a respected career in film and television.

She starred in the 1975 isiZulu feature film Udeliwe, one of South Africa’s earliest Black-led productions, alongside the late Joe Mafela and directed by the late Simon Sabela.

Her acting credits also include appearances in Shaka Zulu, where she played Mkabi, as well as roles in various 1990s productions and later in the SABC2 soapie Muvhango, where she earned widespread recognition across generations.

Award-winning legacy

Throughout her career, Shange was honoured for her contribution to the arts, receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award from the South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs), as well as recognition from the Simon Mabhunu Sabela Film and Television Awards.

She is survived by her children — including media personality Nonhle Thema — as well as her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The family said funeral and memorial arrangements will be announced at a later stage.
