Minister Of Police Denies Claim of Reporting Mkhwanazi To IPID

The Minister of Police, Mr. Senzo Mchunu, has refuted the claims by some news channels making it’s round as regards the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) against the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi.

According to Mchunu, the article had stirred confusion, suggesting that he had lodged the complaint.

However, IPID has since issued a statement correcting the information, clarifying that the Minister was not involved in any such complaint.
Minister Mchunu, in his official statement on Monday, emphatically denied any personal involvement in filing a complaint against Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi.
“I want to make it absolutely clear that I have not laid any complaint against Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi,” said the Minister.
He further reaffirmed his support for Mkhwanazi, commending the efforts of all Provincial Commissioners, especially those in KwaZulu-Natal, in their ongoing fight against crime.

Mchunu noted that the South African Police Service (SAPS) is actively engaged at both the national and provincial levels, working to combat crime.
“The South African Police Service is hard at work across the country – from Head Office to the provinces,” he stated.
He further noted the dedication of SAPS officers in upholding the rule of law. Reiterating the Ministry of Police full support for all Provincial Commissioners, including Mkhwanazi, in their efforts to fight crime.
The Minister acknowledged the challenges faced by the police in combating crime but emphasized that the Ministry is focused on creating effective, efficient, and fair law enforcement processes.
IPID’s Role in Independent Oversight
Minister Mchunu also addressed the role of the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) as an independent and impartial body that ensures accountability within the South African Police Service.
He stressed that IPID conducts investigations without any external influence and makes its decisions independently.
“We support IPID in its work as an independent oversight body. It conducts its investigations without any interference, ensuring accountability within the police force,” Mchunu concluded.
