Men Beaten For Selling Broken Tiles As Samsung Phones In Verulam CBD Scam

Chaos erupted in the Verulam CBD, KwaZulu-Natal, when three men were caught running a shocking scam involving broken tiles disguised as Samsung smartphones.

According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), officers responded at around 15:02 to reports of a mob assaulting the suspects on Moss Street.

The men had allegedly tricked multiple victims by posing as sellers of the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, luring buyers with what appeared to be a genuine device at a heavily discounted price.

How the Fake Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra Scam Worked

Victims revealed the scammers would display an authentic Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra to prove the phone’s features. Claiming to be desperate for quick cash, they would agree to sell the device at a fraction of its value.

Once the deal was sealed, buyers were handed a sealed Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra box, carefully wrapped in toilet paper to look authentic. But inside, instead of a premium smartphone, unsuspecting buyers discovered only a broken tile.

One elderly man reportedly lost R100, while another victim was scammed out of R500 before the fraud was exposed.

After realising the deception, furious victims alerted bystanders, who quickly cornered the conmen. A bag was recovered containing two additional boxes packed with broken tiles instead of smartphones.

The suspects were forced to return the stolen cash before being handed over to authorities.
