Mduduzi Shabalala Double Fires Kaizer Chiefs To Joint-Top Spot In DStv Premiership

Kaizer Chiefs have climbed to joint-top of the DStv Premiership standings alongside Mamelodi Sundowns after an emphatic 4-1 win over Orbit College at the FNB Stadium on Tuesday night.

It’s a remarkable turnaround for Amakhosi, who have struggled over the past two seasons, failing to secure a top-eight finish. But with renewed energy and attacking intent, their resurgence now sees them being mentioned in the same breath as the dominant Sundowns — and deservedly so.

Chiefs’ latest triumph, secured through a commanding display, places them level on 22 points with the Brazilians, who remain ahead only on goal difference.

Shabalala’s Brilliance Lifts Amakhosi

Man of the Match Mduduzi Shabalala was at the heart of the victory, scoring twice — once in each half — to inspire his side.

The young star opened the scoring just four minutes into the game, finishing neatly from the edge of the box after a flowing move involving Thabo Cele, Mfundo Vilakazi and Thabiso Monyane.

Shabalala doubled his tally shortly after the hour mark, before Vilakazi added his name to the scoresheet with a stunning finish that restored calm following a brief scare. Substitute Flavio Silva then sealed the result, combining well with Gaston Sirino to make it 4-1 — his second goal in four days.

Orbit’s Ayanda Lukhele had briefly threatened a comeback when he headed past Brendon Petersen on 70 minutes, but Vilakazi’s superb response ensured Chiefs remained in control until the final whistle.

Despite the convincing scoreline, Amakhosi could have easily scored more. Etiosa Ighodaro missed two clear opportunities, while Monyane and Vilakazi also came close as Orbit’s defence was repeatedly breached. Chiefs’ finishing, however, often lacked composure.

Petersen was called into action late in the game as Orbit pushed forward, but the Chiefs’ defence held firm to secure three vital points that put them level with Sundowns — who have a superior goal difference of +12 to Amakhosi’s +7.

Elsewhere, Polokwane City edged AmaZulu 1-0 at the Princess Magogo Stadium after goalkeeper Daren Johnson’s costly error gifted Bulelani Nikani the winner.

Sekhukhune United and Richards Bay settled for a 1-1 draw, while Chippa United and Magesi FC shared the spoils in a goalless stalemate.
