Mchunu Says Thabo Bester Was Arrested For Speeding And Then Released Two Months After Escape

Thabo Bester Arrest And Subsequent Release

On July 12, 2022, traffic officers in Laingsburg stopped Bester for speeding. Unbeknownst to them, they were interacting with a notorious rapist and murderer. Police Minister Senzo Mchunu later confirmed that at the time, law enforcement was unaware of Bester’s escape status.

Bester presented a fraudulent smart identity card bearing the name Katlego Nkwana, leading officers to suspect misconduct. He was subsequently taken to the Department of Home Affairs, where the fraud was verified.

Despite being detained for the act, Bester was released, with an upcoming court appearance scheduled for August 8 that he ultimately failed to attend. This case was thereafter deemed ‘nolle proseque,’ indicating that no prosecution would occur.

Questions arose regarding the delay in sharing arrest details, with Mchunu explaining that the complexity of ongoing investigations involving several suspects contributed to the lack of public awareness.
